Storm victims still waiting on disaster assistance, payouts

Mayor Tim Kerner Jr. has partnered with the Louisiana Department of Insurance to host a resource event at the Jean Lafitte Senior Center on Monday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Kerner said the goal is to provide a central location for residents in Barataria, Crown Point, Lafitte and Lower Lafitte to ask questions about their insurance claims.

“The stories that I’m hearing from people is that the insurance companies are really taking advantage of the situation,” Kerner said. “They’re not getting back to people. People can’t get them on the phones.”

People with questions are asked to bring copies of their insurance policies to the event.

“We are working as hard as possible to make sure that you get your lives back, and we move forward together,” Kerner said.

Still, many residents told WDSU that they are struggling to get back to life like it was before Hurricane Ida.

“It’s just been like you’re living an adventure and you don’t know when it’s going to end,” said Linda Buras of Barataria. “We’re still waiting on (the Small Business Administration) and it’s been a long time. They update you once, a couple times a month, but it’s a long process.”
