After wild speculation, Grambling State confirmed the hire of former Baylor head coach Art Briles, a spokesperson told 247Sports’ Brandon Marcello and Chris Hummer. Briles will be the offensive coordinator under Hue Jackson. There were reports linking Briles to the school with a deal imminent, but nothing came about until reports surfaced that the two sides came to an agreement. However, the school denied the initial report Thursday, via a spokesperson.
Grambling State officials originally said there was no truth to the rumors, but now that is not the case. Briles will make his first return to college football since his firing from Baylor in 2016. The initial report of Briles’ impending hire came from KTAL-6 Shreveport, but the story was deleted from the station’s website. KTAL-6 then re-confirmed the story later in the day.
Briles was the head coach at Houston from 2003-07 and then Baylor from 2008-15. During his eight years at Baylor, Briles compiled a record of 65-37, leading the Bears to two Big 12 Championships and a 3-3 record in bowl games. Briles was the Big 12 and AP College Football Coach of the Year in 2013.
