New UMass head football coach Don Brown is working some old connections to fill some important roles on his staff. The latest hire is Steve Casula, a former Michigan offensive analyst, as offensive coordinator — a move the team made official Saturday morning.
Casula has been on staff at Michigan since 2019 and worked with Brown, who was the defensive coordinator with the Wolverines for five seasons before moving to Arizona for the last season leading up to his hiring at UMass.
“I worked with Steve in Ann Arbor, and our thoughts are compatible when it comes to his offensive philosophy and the way that he moves the football,” Brown said in a statement. “Steve was a chief architect of Ferris State’s run to the national championship in 2018 and I am so excited to welcome Steve, his wife Stephanie, and his entire family to Amherst!”
Casula was the offensive coordinator at Division 2 Ferris State prior to making his move to Michigan. He was hired for that post in 2017 and helped the Bulldogs reach the D2 playoffs, finishing with an 11-2 record. Ferris State won the national championship the next year and Casula landed the Michigan job after that.
