Texas A&M QB Haynes King sidelined with a lower leg injury

Texas A&M QB Haynes King sidelined with a lower leg injury. King underwent surgery Sunday and could be out until at least mid-October, On3 reported Monday. The second-year freshman was injured on the second drive of the fifth-ranked Aggies’ eventual 10-7 win over Colorado on Saturday and did not return.

Texas A&M starting quarterback Haynes King underwent surgery Sunday to repair a leg injury, head coach Jimbo Fisher announced Monday.

“He has a crack in his lower leg that they fixed and operated on, clean as a whistle,” Fisher said. “It went really good, as good as it could humanly be. As far as a timeline, I’m not a doctor. I’ll just say when you heal, you heal. We would never play him before (he’s ready) in any way, shape or form before that.”

According to a report from On3, King could be out until at least mid-October.

King, a second-year freshman, was injured on the second drive of the fifth-ranked Aggies’ eventual 10-7 win over Colorado on Saturday and did not return. He left the field on crutches. Backup Zach Calzada struggled in his place, finishing just 18-of-38 for 143 yards and at one point fumbling into the end zone. He did, however, ultimately lead a game-winning touchdown drive with 2:41 left.

King competed with Calzada throughout the offseason to succeed four-year starter Kellen Mond. Coach Jimbo Fisher finally named him the starter on Aug. 25. In the Aggies’ season-opening 41-10 rout of Kent State, the dual-threat QB finished 21-of-33 for 292 yards and two touchdowns, but he also threw three interceptions. He completed one 8-yard pass against Colorado before leaving the game.
