Ole Miss, Maryland stars among college football Week 1's top performers

College football Week 1 rarely disappoints, and in particular this year’s slate brought fans some truly electric atmospheres as fans packed stadiums for the first time since the 2019 season. Notre Dame and Florida State gave the country a game to remember on Sunday night, and five straight days of action provided a ton of entertainment.

One notable storyline: Some of the week’s top performers were players who entered Week 1 relatively unproven, or at least unproven at their new schools — including multiple transfers. It seemed that there was less chalk than usual over the weekend.

ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit named his top performers of the week on Tuesday, including some names that few would have guessed coming into the slate.

That list includes: Florida State quarterback McKenzie Milton, Alabama quarterback Bryce Young, Ole Miss quarterback Matt Corral, Ole Miss wide receiver Dontario Drummond, Iowa defensive back Riley Moss, Georgia linebacker Nakobe Dean, Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa, Maryland wide receiver Dontay Demus Jr., Michigan State running back Kenneth Walker III and Notre Dame quarterback Jack Coan.
