Former UConn stars lead U.S. 3-on-3 women’s basketball team to berth in Summer Olympics

Stefanie Dolson and Katie Lou Samuelson are headed to the Olympics. The former UConn standouts teamed up with Allisha Gray and Kelsey Plum to lead the U.S. 3-on-3 women’s basketball team to a berth in the Summer Games in Tokyo.

The U.S. punched its ticket with a 21-13 semifinal win over Spain on Sunday in Graz, Austria.

“We fought really hard,” Stefanie Dolson said through USA Basketball. “We knew this was going to be a tough game and just really proud of how we performed.”

France, the other semifinal winner, and Japan, winner of the third-place game, earned the other two berths for the inaugural Olympic event.

Gray, who currently plays for the WNBA’s Dallas Wings, led the Americans in scoring throughout the competition with 39 points. Dolson added 34 points, followed by Plum with 32 and Samuelson with 22.

The U.S. went 4-0 in pool play, then defeated Belarus 21-10 in the quarterfinals.

“I think the pool play games really prepared us for today,” Samuelson said. “We really feel like we were hitting our stride in our two games.”

Samuelson was added to the U.S. roster in March, replacing former UConn teammate Napheesa Collier.

The 3-on-3 competition is slated for July 24-28 in Japan.
