The USFL’s inaugural draft kicked off Tuesday, and a former Georgia Bulldog was the first defensive player off the board. Linebacker Davin Bellamy was the first pick of the second round by the New Orleans Breakers.
Bellamy was a four-star recruit and the No. 19 player at his position in the 2013 signing class, according to the industry-generated 247Sports Composite rankings. Bellamy starred on the Georgia defense from 2014 to 2017.
In 2016, Bellamy was tied for the team lead in sacks with 5.0, and he was second on the Bulldogs in tackles for loss with nine. One year later, Bellamy played a key role in helping Georgia reach the College Football Playoff National Championship Game with 7.5 tackles for loss and five sacks.
In his career at Georgia, Bellamy racked up 135 total tackles (24 for loss) and 13 sacks Despite his success in Athens, Bellamy went undrafted in 2018. Still, he signed his first NFL contract with the Houston Texans as an undrafted free agent. After spending much of his rookie season on the practice squad, Bellamy was waived by the Texans in August of 2019.
Bellamy has also had brief stints with the Cincinnati Bengals, Tennessee Titans, San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Chargers.
