There’s a simple motto for the Georgia Bulldogs this season: “You’re either elite or you’re not.”
Georgia’s defense is beyond elite. It’s historic. Even with an uncharacteristic performance in the SEC title game – UGA allowed more points to Alabama (41) than it had in any full month this season – Georgia’s defense remains among the best of the modern era.
The Bulldogs have allowed just 11 offensive touchdowns in 13 games. They have surrendered a nation’s-best four yards per play. Georgia is yielding .63 net points per drive, according to Football Outsiders. That’s the second-best rate of any defense since 2007 when Football Outsiders began tracking that stat. The only other defense that allowed fewer than .75 was 2011 Alabama (.51 net points per drive).
Six Bulldog defenders have earned at least one first or second-team All-American honor. Every defensive starter was named to an all-SEC team. The NFL scouting community is drooling over this group. One scout told 247Sports that “at least 10” Georgia defenders could be drafted in 2022 if all of the team’s eligible underclassmen declare.
