Park plates 17 runs, eliminates Bruins

The Wheeling Park baseball team bounced back in a big way.

After failing to score a run against John Marshall on Tuesday, the Patriots scored at least three in each inning they were up to bat, en route to a 17-3, five-inning victory over Brooke Wednesday in a Class AAA Region 1 Section 1 matchup.

Wheeling Park, who staved off elimination, will host John Marshall at 5 p.m. today.

The Monarchs fell to Morgantown Wednesday, 7-1. The winner will face the Mohigans Friday.

“We just kept playing,” Wheeling Park coach Steve Myers said. “It’s win or go home and our guys came ready to play.”

After giving up an RBI single to Charlie Fuscardo in the first inning, the Patriots responded with five runs, as they capitalized on two walks and three errors.

Dylan Gongola tallied a two-run double in the second inning to make it 8-1. He also plated a run in the first inning with a single.

The Bruins scored a couple of runs in the third inning to trim the lead. Blaise Buchmelter made it to base safely on an error. Braelynn Sperringer followed that with a single. Andrew Coursin sent Buchmelter home with an RBI single, while Sperringer made it home safely on an error.
