The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) thanked President Joe Biden on social media Thursday for a two cent drop in gas prices, even though they have risen by a full dollar since he took office.
The applause for Biden roused criticism, including from The Washington Post, which said it “might be the worst defense of the Biden Administration yet.”
The graphic presented by the DCCC in its tweet depicted what appeared to be a hefty drop in the average price of a gallon of gas.
In reality, the price has only gone down two cents, while it has risen by a dollar since Biden took office in January.
Critics on Twitter suggested the DCCC had mistakenly ripped the graph from commentator Matthew Iglesias, who intended for it to be a joke, according to Fox Business.
“What happens when your comms people don’t understand sarcasm,” tweeted Washington Post columnist Catherine Rampell.
