Barbara Shuler, Intermezzo: Youth Music Monterey’s ‘last’ concert of COVID season

Youth Music Monterey delivers its last concert of the COVID season in a farewell virtual flourish, both on YouTube and live-streamed at Hidden Valley Music Seminars.  Music director Danko Drusko conducts the concert, which takes place Sunday at 3 p.m. and includes works by two African American composers:  Nkeiru Okoye’s “Voices Shouting Out” and Kevin Day’s “Lightspeed.”  The Honors Orchestra program will also play the overture to Mozart’s “Magic Flute.”

Drusko leads the Junior Youth Orchestra in “The Prince of Denmark’s March“ by Jeremiah Clark along with the Intermezzo from  “Carmen” and “Overture to Die Fledermaus.” Seventeen players from the organization’s South County Strings program will join the Youth Orchestra for the Intermezzo.

People are invited to attend the concert on the organizations’ YouTube channel or show up in person at Carmel Valley’s Hidden Valley theater to enjoy the livestream and a reception afterward.  Indoor and outdoor viewing options are available, and the reception will be in the gardens just outside the theater.

“Meet and greet old and new friends, the YMM staff, and our music director. Enjoy being together again as we celebrate our young musicians and their accomplishments during this difficult and strangest of years!” says executive director Suzanne Mudge.
